Now the real work begins

Hello again, friends and readers.  It has been just over a week since I officially launched my first novel, The Spiral.  And before I say anything else, I’d like to express my most sincere and humble gratitude to everyone for your support.  It has been great hearing from you, and your kind words and encouragement have meant the world to me.  So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Now I have an online presence, which includes this website and various social media, all designed to promote my book and my writing.  Wow, impressive.  I must really know what I’m doing.  Right?  Well, not exactly.  The truth is, I’m just winging it, trying to learn as much as I can and hoping to keep the number of mistakes along the way to a minimum.  But that’s me.  As with most things in my life, I usually end up winging it, whether I want to or not, and to varying degrees of success and/or failure.

Since February, when I finally decided to go the self-published, eBook route, I’ve registered a domain name, designed a website and book cover, created Facebook and Amazon author pages, started Tweeting (and even retweeting!), learned about distribution to online booksellers, and a little bit about blogging…although what to blog about is still a bit of a puzzle.  It has been many hours of reading “how to” articles and even more hours of trial and error, until finally it all started taking shape and I felt myself beginning to relax slightly, comforted by the realization that perhaps, after all, I might just be able to pull off what I had envisioned as a respectable “author platform,” which is publisher mumbo jumbo for “How are you going to market your book so that we don’t have to?”  Talk about a learning curve.  In the end, it’s just a beginning, but I’m happy with how it all turned out.

It has been a long, personal journey since I first sat down at my computer and said to myself, “Hey, I should see if I can write something.”  To finally have a finished product, one that people can actually buy and read, is an accomplishment that I have waited a long time for and worked hard to achieve.  Of course, my dream was to see my novel sitting on the shelf at the bookstore, as a physical book, as I’m sure it is for most aspiring writers, whether they publicly admit it or not.  Maybe one day that dream will come true.  For now, I’m just content to finally have something to show for my effort and to share it with anyone who might enjoy it.

Success as a writer only comes with talent, patience, persistence, dedication, and a little bit of luck.  I’m not sure how many of those qualities I possess, but I do know that the next step for me is writing another book.  Blogging, Tweeting, posting on Facebook, maintaining a website…those are important tools in the marketing and promotional toolbox for engaging existing readers and finding new ones.  I intend to use them to the best of my ability, and I still have so much more to learn.  But they won’t help me get the next book written.  That will require a whole lotta BIC.  Butt In Chair.

Write the next book.  Now the real work begins.

Take care, everyone, and happy reading, whatever it is that currently has you turning pages.
